Had quite a scare today, as I shifted from 2nd to 3rd, something did not sound right, and all I can remember is this HUGE plume of smoke coming out behind me!

At first I thought the engine was blowing up, or a misfire of some kind....

What happened?? And should I be checking under the hood, under the car?
