Is my 240D ready to blow?

Had quite a scare today, as I shifted from 2nd to 3rd, something did not sound right, and all I can remember is this HUGE plume of smoke coming out behind me!

At first I thought the engine was blowing up, or a misfire of some kind....

What happened?? And should I be checking under the hood, under the car?

I can't tell from you description. Before trying to start the Engine be sure to check to see if it has Oil or not.

Look for Oil in the Coolant or Coolant in the Oil indicating a Blown Head Gasket.

Remove the Valve Cover and take a close look at the Camshaft and Valve Train.

Did you still have the correct Oil Pressure?

Is this a Manual or a Auto Transmission?

Big Smoke

I think you just got rid of your carbon collection in the exhaust system.
It happened to me with my 240 on the freeway. The guy behind dam near went of the road.

Ha....that's funny!

I had the same thing happen when I started my 300d for the first time for years...made the mistake of having the garage door open and the car backed into the drive....it shot a huge cloud of carbon out and filled ever square inch of my home...

I am thinking the same thing, when was the last valve adjustment done? Injectors original? Running any alternative fuels?

Ok, just looked under the hood, lots of oil lost. Had to add about a quart.

Looks like oil is dripping from the air filter?

Opened it up, and yes, black oil lined the oil filter housing and filter.

Underneath, it looked like a lot of black oil around the tranny?

Manual transmission.

Oil pressure has been spotty, as it would go low at idle.
Had it checked by a mechanic months ago, and he said the pressure was good, it was just not reading right (the pressure).
When accelerating, or running at a higher rpm than idle, it would go to max, 45, I think is the reading.

Checked the coolant - looks ok, not oily.

Remove the valve cover? That is the casing that I pour the oil into right?

Not enough photos to tell what the problem is....but it sounds like a blown oil cooler line and that would amount to possible a blown engine...

Go find another mechanic! If the oil pressure isn't reading right....there is an issue, these oil gauges are ran by oil pressure....meaning oil goes directly to the gauge....if it isn't reading right, you have an oil leak or something equally as bad...

I hear ya, coojjay.

Thought I was dealing with a "trusted" mechanic, but it makes sense. I was thinking it could be a bad oil pump?

A blown oil cooler line = a blown engine?
Maybe I should change my title to past tense.

If you have a Diaphragm Type Vacuum Pump I believe they will allow Oil into the Intake if the Diaphragm is shot.

If you were only one quart Low that does not sound like an Oil Cooler Line burst on You. But, guess one could still have a small leak.

If you run the Engine see if you have a lot more Blow-by then before.

Your right! He has a 1979, his vacuum pump is probably bad. His model car has a diaghram in the vacuum pump and a line that runs from the vacuum pump to the air cleaner.....when it goes bad it sucks oil into the air cleaner..

Check your vacuum pump!

Edit: Found this - OMG, here we go....VACUUM PUMP FAILURE! Are you neglecting yours??
(BTW, I am a she, not a he).

(Also trying to search the oil cooler line in some other threads, so I can check it later.)

You know, I've done some amazing things with this car.
Mostly basic stuff, but it is always teaching me something.
With the help of this great forum, of course!

Yeah, women can have hobbies like "working on the 240D", too!
What better car to work on, male or female?

Doing the veggie conversion would be the ultimate workover!
