'87 Turbo wagon for sale locally...

Wow... love this color and the model:

*****Mercedes Benz 300tdt 300td w124 Turbo Diesel Wagon 1987

Wondering, what the members on here might say it's worth it and what to look for besides the regular Benz stuff. Note - I've owned an '87 SLD in the past and it's been a good car - so I know a little about those cars, but not an expert by any means.

Mechanically, what's the most vulnerable thing on these that would cost $$$ to sort out?

Thx,
James

Thanks - is there a way to test these myself, or do you have to get it on a hoist?

The ad says it has a "brand new cylinder head installed". If the head truly is "brand new", that alone would make me very interested, but I do wonder why they would want to sell it after that effort/expense.
I'd check if there is any record of the vacuum pump being replaced.
I like the color whether original or not.

I like the color too... I suppose the vacuum pump being replaced would be visible on the outside?

THanks - I found his ad:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-cars-sale/340184-1987-mercedes-benz-300tdt-w124-wagon-*brand-new-rebuilt-head-installed-last-fall.html

Not sure the car is still available - sent him an email... I plan on calling him tomorrow.

There is a video in his thread of the car showing some rust around 3 of the jack points (pretty bad) and a dent in the trunk lid... If there is rust around the jack points than there will be a lot more rust other places.

After seeing that video, that thing looks like a 1500$ ride...the nicest thing on it is the headlights...the color makes it special but that's even in horrible shape, the rot on all the jack points is bad...forget ever using them to jack up the car....I would call this one a beater....I wouldn't want to sink any money into it...if the head was rebuilt and installed professionally with paper work it may be worth a look..but him not being a member and an installed head by a shade tree mechanic...scares me....

I agree $1.5 k tops and be prepared to invest $2-3k and lots of time to get it right. As right as this one is going to get.

BTDT

Thank goodness I live fairly close to vstech. I couldn't have gotten my 300TD right without his help.
