a nice leak OM617

is my slightly oily and otherwise disabled EGR spewing oil onto the strut tower? what is the right course of action here?

EGR doesn't have oil pump pressurized oil in it as far as I know. As you have a 617 in that 240D (I think) it sounds like maybe a bad seal on the turbo oil line?

oh? i will look below the turbocharger at that line. i hadn't seen any oil there previously, and about 200 miles ago my indie replaced the seals around that oil line. interesting, and thanks Codifex for the tip.

after a vigorous drive i checked again. the vertical oil pipe beneath the turbo (is there a second one?) - is dry. the lower lip of that snubby thing in front of the turbocharger is oily. it is the EGR device, isn't it? i blocked off the vacuum or pressure signal it used to get and have a nice blockoff plate on the other end where exhaust would "recirculate" to the intake.

i would appreciate some advice as i don't see anything to unbolt or loosen in order to replace whatever bushing is leaking.

I wish I could help mate - I have no turbo - and my vivid imagination probably won't help.

BUMP for help!

That would be a wastegate not egr valve, the egr valve sits on the front of the intake manifold on a 617 engine. Your photo shows the wastegate. Not a good sign, you want it working to avoid overboost, they do rust out or the hose is split. Yes there would be some oil (blow by). BE SURE to check boost!

Oil feed line maybe? Clean everything and go for a drive.

There shouldn't be any oil at the wastegate. It would seem to me you blew a seal in the turbo charger. You may want to open up the inlet and see if there is a bunch of oil. If it is coming from the turbine side, see if there is any evidence of oil in the exhaust tail pipe.

i stand corrected. thanks clacker, that helps. i did find some information on opening it up at Tweaking the Mercedes 617 Turbo Diesel .

is it right that it not be connected to anything else though? i get the impression it used to be connected by a little hose over to the EGR on the intake side.

is ARV the same as wastegate? it looks like the same part in the vacuum/pressure diagram.

The wastegate should have a hose from the compressor side housing to the wastegate itself. The boost pressure from the compressor, pushes the valve in the wastegate to bypass exhaust from the turbine to prevent it from over boosting.

ARV stands for Air Recirculation Valve. It is not the same as the wastegate.

The other thing is how is your crankcase vent hooked up? What is the routing? That could be the source of oil if it leads to the turbo inlet.

i am used to an oily intake because of the PCV; haven't set up my catch can yet. however, oil spraying out of the wategate sure does sound like a seal has gone.

if anyone can supply a photo of the correct plumbing i would appreciate it.

I just realize you have a Cali engine installed. For the crankcase vent, it inherently is flawed as it does to have an oil separator. My guess you are definitely dumping a lot of oil into the turbo.

Here is what the vent looks like stock..

Not a Cali air box, but close, here is mine with the oil separator.

If you add in an oil separator, you will have to dump the oil in a catch can or the road.

In another topic, because I just realized you have a Cali motor, you are going to need the specific upper Cali low side hard refrigerant line. The unit you have currently, I believe will not work because it is bent wrong. Probably the easier solution is to do away with hard line and go with all rubber hoses.
