timing chain

I am getting ready to replace my timing chain on my 1985 300d (251k miles). I bought it with 247k and dont know if it has ever been changed. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if the factor chain has been changed? I have a new chain already but what else should I replace while doing the job? Also where can I rent a chain crimper so i dont have to buy it for a one time use?

Ben

Welcome to the forum

The master link of a replacement chain in usually blue in color, while the chain it self is gray.
If you find a blue link in your chain is was replaced.
Chains installed at the factory are endless, they have no master link.
Even if you find a blue link, you don't know when the chain was installed.
I would recommend replacing the chain, given the fact that you have a new one already.

If your 85 is a turbo you have to remove the chain tensioner.
You need a new gasket for the tensioner and probably a valve cover gasket.
Also the spring inside the tensioner should be replaced.
If it is a non turbo you can leave the tensioner in.

You may be able to rent a crimper in the tool loaner section of this forum.

Welcome to the Forum Benny, hope to see you around for a long time.

Did you check the Chain stretch? here is a good article on that.

PeachPartsWiki: Measuring Timing Chain Stretch

I haven`t replaced a chain as of yet but know how to break one and what that sounded like.

Here is a good thread that Cell did a couple years back.

Here is Diesel Giants how to on the chain replacement.

There is also the rental program here on the forum. maybe some one has the tools you need.
