timing chain
I am getting ready to replace my timing chain on my 1985 300d (251k miles). I bought it with 247k and dont know if it has ever been changed. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if the factor chain has been changed? I have a new chain already but what else should I replace while doing the job? Also where can I rent a chain crimper so i dont have to buy it for a one time use?

Welcome to the forum
The master link of a replacement chain in usually blue in color, while the chain it self is gray. If you find a blue link in your chain is was replaced. Chains installed at the factory are endless, they have no master link. Even if you find a blue link, you don't know when the chain was installed. I would recommend replacing the chain, given the fact that you have a new one already. If your 85 is a turbo you have to remove the chain tensioner. You need a new gasket for the tensioner and probably a valve cover gasket. Also the spring inside the tensioner should be replaced. If it is a non turbo you can leave the tensioner in. You may be able to rent a crimper in the tool loaner section of this forum.
