For anyone with an OM617, check (or replace) your air cleaner mounts!

And spend the $60 to get factory ones vs Chinese ones. The ones on my car seemed fine (as in the air cleaner was still firmly attached), but I normally don't have any reason to check things under the hood more than once per tank of fuel, and in less time than that all 3 mounts broke and the air cleaner shook loose and sucked in enough dirt to seize the turbo. It didnt even take that long, only about 1/2 tank of fuel worth of driving 50 miles per day.

The best thing I did on mine to resolve the air cleaner mounts was a very thorough valve adjustment. In fact, two adjustments 100-200 mi. apart, really smoothed things out. Also, install the little heat shields and they last longer.

I would be a little concerned about the possibility of another problem. From what I've heard, a turbo failure is more likely from contaminated or a lack of oil. There would have to be a considerable amount of dust, for extended time, for that to cause a turbo failure.

Hmm, well the car has very high mileage (the odometer is broken and was broken when I got it, but its at least 425k by now). I don't know how to adjust the valves, but other than after driving on the freeway for a long period of time then sitting at idle it doesn't seem to shake excessively. Hopefully there aren't any other problems, either way unless I find something else obviously wrong theres not much I can do beyond change the oil and put a $50 used turbo in it and hope it works. It hasn't ever been run low on oil while I had it, and I have always used good old and filters.

I still think that the air filter coming loose had something to do with it, because the turbo was fine a few months ago, then the reason I noticed the air cleaner had come loose was the turbo had started making a really bad sound and I was looking to see if I could find out what happened.

You need to learn how to adjust the valves a very very very very and I will throw in another very important part of maintenance...

Mercedes Diesel Valve Adjustment Procedure

Also check your motor mounts, these being bad will cause shakes and also the air cleaner mounts to break....as well as the possibility of the power steering pump cutting through an oil cooler line...
