That could indeed be a way to get round import paper work - but if you have to play the game with a system that checks the engine number for an annual safety test you might find it hard to actually use it.

Here is an older thread about the Gurkha

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/open-discussion/247196-gurkha-action.html

Post#3 the guy mentions the OM616 Turbo is NLA, this is dated from 2010.

Moding a gurkha.

Found some more info.

Was there ever a U.S. OM 616 Turbo?

As luck would have it, most of us don't reside in areas where such systems are in place. My Merc doesn't even have to be emissions tested here in Washington State, and truth be told, if they did do visual inspections, they wouldn't likely have a clue what the heck they were looking at.

Depends on the EPA radar I guess!

Stuff parts into willing teenagers? Wheelchairs? Medical supplies? I don't know - do we have any members in the Dominican Republic who can give advice on this?

I'm guessing just listing the contents are replacement auto parts would suffice. I'm pretty sure the EPA doesn't hang out on the docks with diesel part sniffing dogs. I mean, those clear turn signal reflectors are sold all over the place here, and those really are on the import ban list.

A good friend of mine knows some people that were playing with the idea of importing old school BMW motorcycle clones from China. (Actually pretty nice clones) As it turned out, importing a whole bike was a problem, and had a ton of paperwork and fees associated with it. Importing the bikes disassembled, however, and constructing them on home soil was no problem at all.

There is pretty much a way to do just about anything, it seems.

There are tons of MB 201 (?) vans running around India with the turbo 616 engines. I would think replacement engines for them would be readily available since they are so widespread and used as mini buses/taxis/airport shuttles. It's not as if they're just used in the Gurkha.

Thank you Kerry Gurkha is still around, got myself a new Gurkha and a Rexton W which is Korean version of 2007 ML270 with OM612 five cylinder. They put a VGT on it and tuned it to 184bhp with 401NM of torque, even with all that weight the thing flies and keeps up with other SUVs.

The Land Rover fans have a major problem with their non US market vehicles being seized, and without compensation...

The DI turbo OM616 develops 82bhp with 230NM of torque compared to previous IDI turbo's 91bhp and 190NM of torque.

The Rexton VGT OM612 Turbo does 184bhp with 401NM of torque.
