Power Steering Pump Hot?

Does your power steering pump get hot when running? I'm wondering if mine is getting too hot or just normal? I checked and it is not rubbing anything obvious.

Take a temperature scanner and read the temperature. They will be at least warm by nature as they are always working when the engine is running. They have to generate enough pressure to open a bypass valve until the pressure is required to aid the steering box.

I am not certain as they could be also be running open loop till the work is required. You might get some ideal by checking any other cars pump as well. My suspicion is they all operate about the same. Besides the seals they could in theory operate at up to 400 degrees without degading the fluid much but the work lost as heat would be very inneficient.

I don't know. I'll try to remember to take my IR thermometer and get a running temp off my original (5/83) ZF pump after a drive.

They run hot enough to require a simple "radiator" - an un-finned loop of tubing that runs in front of the radiator. I have no idea how hot is too hot, but someone will know.

Don't forget that it is bolted to an engine that is running 180 deg F or more. That alone will make it feel hot.

Warm is fine, uncomfortable to the touch is just fine. If it's removing your fingerprints or smoking, you have an issue.
