2.2L Timing Cover part number 6010150201
Hi there,
My timing cover was damaged when the belt tensioner mount pulled out. I removed most of the front components and took a look at the part number. 6010150201. When I look for this part on-line, I only see European listings. If this is a 2.2L 4 Cylinder, will the 6010150601 part fit? If I can't get this part, it looks like I'll be looking for a replacement engine. Thanks, John

I'm pretty sure all the 60x motors use the same timing cover, and it's been superseded several times for strength improvements... I've got a 2.5T that I'm parting out if you need that cover.

Swanky
Wow,
Searching high and lo for the answer and lo and behold - right here it is!! So you want to give me a call? and give me a price idea or what? I've heard about using an MB type compound for the mating surfaces on the front and something else where it hits the head and oil pan. How the *&^$ do I get the crank shaft pulley nut off? That's a good mind bender. Maybe a strap wrench to hold it steady? Lastly, I've pretty much got this puppy ready to pull. Any thoughts on trying to do this while still in? Appreciatively, John

no strap wrench is capable of holding the crank against the torque required for that bolt...
you need a physical blockage. either something holding the flywheel, or a steel rod passing through a hole in one of the pulleys... I have the front off the donor car... not sure how you'd go about it in the vehicle without pulling everything off. I assume you have a w201 190D vehicle... the entire front of the car should come off... bumper, radiator, ac condenser, radiator support upper... all of it. then you can get in there to hold everything. you may need to get a flywheel lock tool from the tool rental forum for this... or build one.

So actually this is out of an 87 124. That's a nice tool Sixto but I'll prolly jam a large punch into the pulley?! Okay so I'm interested in pulling the motor and replacing the cover. Any other glitches to expect other than whether to pull the first couple bolts off the head and what to do with the pan?
I'm down to the starter, engine mounts and transmission/engine joining bolts. By the way, the reason why I'm doing this is that it has the 5 speed in it...other than I'm nuts. John

I hope the 601 damper is different but the 603 damper has a solid face even after removing the pulley. There's nowhere to wedge a punch. If you're pulling the motor, drop the pan and wedge a crank counterweight. DON'T TURN THE CRANK WITHOUT KEEPING THE CAM IN TIME! These engines take piston-valve interference to a new level. I wouldn't loosen any head bolts but remove the two bolts going down ahead of the cam sprocket into the front cover, of course. The manual says you can replace the front cover without removing the head or the pan. Good luck keeping the gaskets intact.
You have an '87 220D 5-speed? MB didn't make such a beast. Did you roll your own? Sixto 87 300D |

Rolling my own
Why of course but this one came special to me. I see that there are remnants of a 603 of which I have had 3 (2 currently TDs). There's some sort of module or major junction behind the battery that was bypassed.
As for the wedge or drift keeping the crank from turning, I looked at it and there's nooo way to put my theory to practice. I like the idea of that tool but how does it work. I'm I off my rockers to be talking about that in this forum? I'm still looking for that part v-guy. You a seller? Com' on. My fear is that it will leak but there's no end to solutions. John

The ring gear lock tool is available ok ebay. You remove the couple of long bolts into the oil pan closest to the access hole into the bell housing. Slide in the locking tool so it engages the teeth of the ring gear. Use the oil pan bolts or provided bolts to hold the tool in place. There's a similar tool that slides in place of the starter. It's an option if you don't mind removing the starter or if you're working on the engine with the oil pan off. In that case just wedge a crank counterweight.

I like the sound of the starter substitution flywheel locker. I think I'd rather do that if it's available. Was actually considering swapping my 603 back into this little critter just for fun.
