How about a can of purge? Algae?
One of the first things I did with the new engine was put two cans of diesel purge into the tank after running it down to below empty. That was before I read how easy it is to rig up a makeshift fuel "tank" so as to purely run the purge through - perhaps I should try that with another can or two and see if there's any difference.

After thinking about it bit more I may yet bite the bullet and buy a new injection pump on ebay (I'm seeing them anywhere from $400-$800) and attempt to install/adjust it myself. What do you guys think? Try to fix my current IP or risk it with a 'new' one?

Bean-
Although Kent Bergma does not have many fans here, I watch his videos on youtube. He has a video that describes a problem very similar to yours. It turned out to be a clogged fuel tank screen.

Check it out before hanging up your gloves man.

Do you have a diesel fuel leak around the pressure valves on the IP. If so, replacing the o-rings and copper washers will stop the leak and increase power.

Hmmm...
do you have more pics of the car? the interior? the engine compartment?

is that car covered in Primer? or do you have chalkboard vinyl covering it for the pic?

I'd LOVE to have a 4th 87TD, but I think we can get you running...

Someone on the forum has a parts car with whatever part the problem turns out to be. Don't give up if it is a nice car.

I'd like a TD but am too far, have too many projects and would soon be divorced were I to have another car dropped off.

Same here, would love a 87 wagon... but wife has said no more cars and wants a few I have gone... oh well. X2 on the tank screen, easy to check on the wagon. Also, might be the lift pump? I had a similar issue on my 85 with the 617, not sure if the 603 has the same set up of not, but swapping out mine solved the issues.

I may have a TD wagon for sale soon, and I'm only 1 state away from you...

Aww come on John, you know you want that wagon for your teenage daughter. She would be the darling of her high school pulling up in that thing decorated like that.

+1, the thing I have to hide from my wife when web surfing is the searches "mercedes diesel" on ebay and looking at the FS section of this forum.

Ask Professor Google for the sites that search multiple Craigs lists. I like CL better than fleabay. I haven't looked at either lately.

I'm starting a parts business. The main supplier has mostly crash parts. I need a good source for the mechanicals. Perhaps I'll do a tow mirror & bumper install how to on my diesel ram then promote the mirrors on the forums. I haven't looked at the MBZ parts I have access to yet. Not gonna do body work for a while.

I was just wondering, if you replaced the tranny too, could you be lacking power because it doesn't match up with your differential?
