Intense shaking at idle

So I just completed my first DIY valve adjustment. Initial runs of the car were very successful in terms of it starting up well and not leaking from the valve cover. With that I went on my merry way today and drove it to work (40 mile round trip). On the way home whenever I would stop at a stop light I noticed a pretty intense shaking at idle and even some decreased power. When I got it in the garage I opened the hood and saw that the engine was really rocking back and forth pretty well and I had a big time leak from the oil cap.

Did I really screw something up on the valve adjustment?

Thanks for any advice.

Joe

Hmm

If there where excess miles since the last adjustment, it may need to be adjusted several times within a month.

Loss of gap = valve held open = compression loss = carbon deposits on valve seat and face = MPG loss + power Loss =
you buy this car, and have the valves adjusted, then 3 - 30 days later power/MPG drop again = the carbon deposits on valve seat and face have at least partially broken up = Loss of gap = valve held open = valves must be adjusted again.

I suggest you read through this DIY...

A few oil changes, more adjustments and drive it like you stole it. You'll be fine. These cars need to blown out anyway with the carbon unlike newer OM60x engines.

Does this happen with a cold or operating temp engine, or can you tell?

If only at operating temps, could be a failed rack damper bolt (pin).

It is only happening when it's hot. Specifically when I've had a good run of 55 mph or more. I adjusted the rack damper last night and I'm going to drive it again to see if it helps. If it's excess carbon, would another diesel purge help?

My money is on a weak rack damper spring/pin/bolt, whatever you want to cal it. Replace with new and take some time to get it adjusted.

IMHO

was it shaking before the valve adjustment?

did you do it cold or warm?

it is always advised to adjust valves bit loose rather than too tight but if too tooo
loose I guess shakes will come....

purge will not help in that matter....

cheers
ChO

I took it out this morning and really rode it hard on accelerations and kept it over 70 mph for about 5 miles. After this ride it wasn't shaking. I think when I adjusted the valves (kept them looser rather than tighter) it may have thrown things out of whack like was stated in the first reply. I'm going to replace the rack damper anyway and then continue with another valve adjustment. I honestly have no idea how long it went between valve adjustments.

Carbon builds up on the valve face and seat, diesel purge is for the fuel delivery system.

so, what does that rack damper bolt (617) actually do?

After driving it hard....you are breaking away the carbon on the valves....hints to why the shaking is better....check your valves again and see if they need adjusting again...
