If this is an early '80s 617, do a search on 'cigarette butt' and 'foam peanut.'

Here's a fix that worked for several years on my signature car. Remove the amplifier from the "ash can". Then, cut out a piece of thin cardboard or construction paper about the size of a quarter. Build a little mountain of RTV on it and allow it to harden, then install it into the ash can with the silicone facing the amplifier. Reinstall it on the car and make it just tight enough to operate the tach. As the amplifier deteriorates further, keep tightening the ash can a little at a time. Eventually, you can order a replacement part from PP as I did recently.
