W126 Axle Boot Questions -- Brand Preference, etc.

Yup, I need emergency replacement of the passenger's-side outer and should also do the others soon. I'm looking at the Febis right now... what do you guys think?

I tried to find the Astoria Flexx boots (how do you spell that?), but no luck... anyone got a link for them?

astoria2000.com

Get the 3001 boot. Spend the extra bucks and get 5 of them (2 per axle +1 extra).

I haven't ripped one yet, but I've ripped others I've used, and in the middle of a job its no fun to be one short.

You'll need either their installation cone (which I have, and I love it), or a decently large transmission funnel. And crimping pliers (not absolutely necessary).

Really easy to do. I've used Dorman before and the only thing Dorman has going for it is that it's usually available at the store. Astoria takes a week or so to arrive, but it's worth the wait if you can stand it. I've never ordered online, only over the phone, so I can't tell you if the web store works well.

As far as I know Febi only makes the Sock Type Boots. The Stock Type Boots cannot be stretched over the axle Cans.

If for some reason you cannot get the Astoria Boot fast enough People like Myself have used the Dorman Boots. Like the Astoria Boots there is 2 types one for smaller vehicles and one for larger vehicles.
The Dorman Boot kit comes with a different type of Clamp and while the Kit has grease you will need more. Places like Autozone sell the Dorman Boots.

Thumbs up

I second the Astoria boots. Just did another set on the 'other' German car (BMW) and they fit great...also rebooted the R&P on the V90 in the fall with their product.

Consider buying a pack of extra boot clamps and spring for a good quality clamping tool. The cheap ones just do not work that well.

+1
the astoria 3001 boot is thicker, and larger than the 3000, and WILL NOT TEAR!
however, I recommend you order extra clamp rings... they are NOT easy to use, and I've ruined the small end MANY MANY times... the 3001 boot is larger on the small end than the axle shaft, and so you need the small clamp very tight, but not too tight, or it lets go when you are crimping it... it's a fine line.

or of course, you can just order rebooted axles from me!~

Unless you have annular axles or a heavy duty press to press out the Homokentic CV joint , you cannot use the Febi boots. A Flexboot type on a Homokentic axle is the way to go.

You know, I've always wanted to reboot axles. In fact, I dreamed of doing it when I was younger .

I guess Astoria will be making $80 off me soon...
