300SD - OM617 Remote Start Installation?

Morning All,

I'd previously installed an Avital 4103 on my buddy's 560SEL. Its a really really nice feature to have. I really liked being able to come out to a warmed up car.

I was on Amazon the other day and found that they are only $45 or so.

I was thinking about installing one on my dad's 300SD. Will certainly take more work. Not 100% sure how do-able it is given that, at the moment, in order to successfully start the car one has to give it a little throttle while cranking...

Anyone just wanted to start this thread for documentation, comments, suggestions, etc.

I'll follow this thread, would be a nice to have. An additional relay to the glow plugs wouldn't be hard, but with the key physically in the off position the vacuum is engaging the fuel shutoff valve.

Seems like an electric vacuum switch would be in order as well to bypass that, but have it reset after a period of time. Not a bad plan really, have it reset after 10 minutes, that way if there's an accidental start from a rogue signal the car will shut itself down in 10 mins ....or maybe 15 if you like longer warmups.

From what I read in the manual for the Avital unit there is a "wait for start" signal that can either be timed or triggered by a ground connection on one of the wires. I think I'd build up a relay to be engaged when the glow plug light turned off.

You would have to use an electric vacuum switch to enable/disable the motor.

I think the Avital defaults to 12 minutes. This was perfect on the 560SEL.

I installed a remote start on my previous car and removed it before I sold it. I have been thinking about putting it in one of my diesels but never even thought of the shutoff valve...haha

most RS kits have contacts for Glow timers and bleed valves... you'd need the actual valve to release vacuum to remote start... and you would have to wire in the glow timer to the circuit...

Agreed.

I bought two Avital 4103XL's on Amazon yesterday. They were only $40 each.

I'd previously installed one in a 560SEL. It was decent task not overly hard just involved and somewhat lengthy.

My biggest issues are:

1) Connection to Ignition Switch wires/circuits.

On the 560SEL I ended up cutting and soldering wires at the back of the ignition switch. This works but I would like to avoid repeating it in the future. I believe I tapped two or three wires in there. Starter, HVAC, and engine electronics.

In looking at pictures of the ignition switch and the associated connectors it looks like I should be able to disassemble the connector and tap directly into the wire/pin instead of having to cut it. I can't remember if I cut and broke the connection to the switch or just cut and wired the RS in parallel with.

2) Turning Off The Engine

Should be relatively straight forward. As previously mentioned, using a valve.

3) Glow Plug Interconnects

The Avital looks like it has a "wait for start" option where it will either wait a specific amount of time to start the car OR it will wait until a signal input line is grounded and then start the car. This is where I'd tie the glow plug relay in..

4) Door Locks

The 300SD, 190E and 420SEL all have their own remote door lock kits. When I installed this RS on the 560SEL I picked up a few relays to make it run the door lock system. I wonder if I could simply tie into the existing remote lock kit and just use it to lock/unlock doors.

5) Other connections.

The 560SEL had the factory alarm which provided a nice central location to tap into a few things like flashers, hood switch, etc. The 300SD does not have this. Not a big deal though always a way to work around things like that.

6) Actually starting the car.

The 617 in the one SD often needs a blip of the throttle to start up. The RS would not be able to do that unless I build an external box that interfaced with the cruise control actuator that would kick the actuator's solenoid and roll the motor forward a little but and let go once the engine was started. Likely not difficult but something I'd rather avoid doing.
