BLOWBY

I forgot to ask on my first post, when I did the blowby test, I saw a grayish white mist like floating around in the head, not what I would call blowby or anything being pushed out of the oil fill hole with the cap removed.
I don't recall anything like that in my last diesel (2006 RAM cummins) but then again it was a lot taller and I didn't necessarily checked for blowby since I bought it new and sold it with just 170K miles.
Is that mist-like stuff normal for the OM606? I understand the rings don't form a completely tight seal around the cylinder so I tend to think it must be somewhat normal?
Car is a 99 e300/om606

Someone else might correct, but to me significant blow-by is visible puffing, like holding a tissue over the hole and seeing it move strongly back and forth. If bad, you would also hear it. It is more noticeable in a smaller hole, like keep the oil fill cap on and remove the small vent pipe (or whatever you have in 99). In my 84 diesel engine, I feel noticeable puffing but not enough to hear, and the engine still starts right up on the coldest mornings and no appreciable oil use, so that should tell you something. On engines with severely worn rings, the crankcase gets pressurized while running, so oil leaks out from every little gap. You can find youtube videos to compare to your engine.

Blow by test? How do you measure it with any credibility? If you have oil seepage due to a pressurized crankcase, then you had better clear the obstruction in the crankcase ventilation system.

Every diesel I've ever seen has that "oil mist". Likely due to oil jets that cool the bottom of the piston. There is a lot of oil moving around in a diesel engine.

Compression check will actually tell you something.

Thanks all for the helpful answers and links. I feel the same way about the "mist" The engine does not puff any smoke out of the oil filler and there is no oil splatter with the cap off.
I just don't remember seeing that in my last small Diesel engine. My other diesels are Mack triaxles and thats whole nother story.
Thanks for the input.
I am still moving forward with the purchase of said car, and hope to have it on my driveway by January or so.

Show us what ya get..

Yeah, Blow-By is a by product of combustion...the pressures in the cylinders. some is going to leak by the Rings.
