center console removal. 1983 240D

'83 model 240D center console removal. Tells of taking out the upper left switch and removal of both left and right screws. I removed the switch out of the socket & I don't seem to find the screws they are referring to. One the front there are two screws to remove it tells on the tunnel side panels. I take it the carpet stays & comes out with the panel. Anyone removed one of the panels anytime lately? Thanks for any help! Needing access for the manual Climate Control Unit.

are you talking about the shifter surround?
the center console around the climate controls?
the entire lower console between the seats?

Since he's pulling it to access the airbox, I'd guess he's removing the last choice on your list... anyway, the carpet is clipped on at two points on each side of the center console and can be a bear to remove. I think I finally did it by pulling the carpet from the console instead of pulling tue console from the carpet, if that makes abuse service.

Behind the switch panel that contains the switches for the rear window defroster,
rear dome light, antenna, and sunroof (if so equipped), there are two screws that are located at the upper left and right that hold the center console to the dash. Normally these two screws are Phillips head unless they have been changed or left out completely when someone removed the console or the dash on a previous occasion.

Yes, I was in reference to completely removing the center console out of the way. On the carpet can it be left in place on the console to slide it out or does it have to be pulled off of the console? On the two screws inside the upper console switch panel, that I didn't see. My intentions on them were after pulling the switches out of the wood facia. I was hoping to just leave the wood in place, and be able to remove the screws. I wasn't for sure that would work or not?

You will need to remove the switch panel wood. There are clips on the back of the wood that hold it in place. The two screws cannot be accessed without removing the wood. You should be able to reach behind the panel if you remove the right under dash panel and push the wood out. I would recommend using a very thin blade type screwdriver to remove the switches first from the front. This will make the removal of the wood easier. Push out the bottom of the wood panel first and then work it out from the top.

Having trouble getting center console out. I have a couple of questions. Will the center console come out with the surround carpet still attached on the tunnel area? Do you need to remove the seats if this is left intact. If you have to remove the surround carpet how do you detach it.

It's a real pain. IIRC, pulling the carpet down from the console is the way to go.

Having one or both of the seats out makes it a lot easier to menuver the console out without removing the carpeted pieces.

So many thanks for the help on the console issue. I am going ok now. But one of the switches is defective, that I purchased. So, will be waylayed until I get another. But in the mean time the cable for the blower switch is locked tight. I am going to have to trace it out and free it up before the switch replacement arrives. The reason it wasn't noticed before was, on account of, the little bead cable was broken.
