I don't know what year/model that unit is from. The temperature sensor is an ntc thermistor and has only 2 leads. Some of the earlier controllers used an external sensor. The sensor on my 1984 W123 is on the circuit board. Here is a link some factory info on the different year/model glowplug controllers, and how they worked. Some schematics are shown:
