Stop Lever Not Moving Towards Valve Cover
I searched and found this. I can't get my stop lever, B in the picture, to move towards the valve cover, so will not activate the valve. Linkages match this picture except the pin in the arc by S is in the middle. I didn't have any issues until I adjusted the valves. I was real careful, so not sure what went wrong. Tried bending things but stopped once it wasn't making any improvement.
Can anyone explain what some of these do? I know what C does, and if it is lengthened will increase fuel which will increase the idle. A has an arc that if bolted at the driver's end will decrease amount of input at the pedal needed. However, I have always had it that way and made sure it wasn't the cause of this new behavior, and it isn't. Any further ideas? Thank you so very much!

I would start disconnecting things one by one until you hit on the problem...
E & D -- Cruise control B -- connects stop lever to tranny and cruise linkages T -- Bowden cable A -- Connects main accelerator linkage to tranny and cruise linkages Does the rest of the system work as expected? Is the hitch solely in the stop lever?

![]() Did that, and binding near or at the arc, just forgot to say it. This why I was stumped and thinking the bracket got bent. I can try again after Church. Good, so was about right on that. Yes, except the cruise control was jerky and would accelerate rapidly, but not decelerate that could be useful. But, that was before this happened, but can check on the way to Church.

I wonder if your idle set screw is part of the problem.
The idle screw had a spring loaded piece on the bottom of it. When you push the stop lever the spring loaded part is compressed. On my one 300SD I broke off the idle screw mount on the IP and had to fabricate some things to restore the idle screw mechanism. In that process I had to switch the spring loaded idle screw for a 10mm piece of all thread as I change the height of the idle screw and needed it to go down further to achieve an acceptable idle speed. In that process the stop function was 'disabled'.

There are 2 positions the stop lever can be assembled after you put the valve cover back on. You have it in the wrong position. BTDT

Thank you all for the replies!
![]() Since I observed the Sabbath yesterday, I went to Wally World and picked up three gallons of Mobil 1 T.D.T. oil as had to somewhat special order. By the time I got home, half the afternoon was gone. Way past due on the oil, thus went for that, instead of something that doesn't affect getting point to point. Anyway, the acceleration part of cruise control is much less jerky and sets better. Quote:
So then how is the picture wrong? I mean, that is exactly how mine looks. I get a picture but don't have the ability right this moment.

Remove C.....Push stop leaver towards valve cover.....there should be a 5-6mm gap between the top of c and the ball on on the stop lever...
