Defective Bosch primer pump (new style)

Anyone else had a new Bosch primer pump, the black style, fail right out of the box?

I had to install mine in my driveway this morning at -4 F, car was not getting fuel and when I tried pumping the old one it immediately pumped out diesel.

Put the new one on and after about eight pumps it started to trickle diesel.

March 4 and I am dealing with a cold weather no start. REALLY. Wow.

Never had the issue...

Are you just pushing it? or attempting to twist and pump it?

Is there a chance it is leaking from underneath the primer?

There is a crush washer that sits level with the top of the lift pump, many people don't know this and install the new crush washer ontop of the old one...thus causing an air/fuel leak.

The new style pump also does not move as much fuel per-pump motion as the old one does.

There was a Member about 5 Years ago that installed a defective Bosch Hand Primer; returned it to the same store and got another and that also turned out to be defective.

He returned it to the same Store and got a refund. He went to the same named Store but in a different location and bought yet another Bosch Hand Primer and that one worked OK.

He said he figured the the First Store had a bad Lot of defective Hand Primes and thought that anothe Store would have the good ones.

As the othes said. People often don't remove the Old Crush Washer because it gets stuck in the recess and either try to reuse it or put the New Cruse washer over the old one and screw the Hand Primer onto 2 Washers.

Picking out the Old Crush Washer can sometimes scratch the surface of the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump.
Overtightening the Hand Primer can warp the Body and it might not seal well.

Yes and no

Yes, you are all correct that my frozen butt forgot to scrape out the old crush washer...

BUT

The new pump is leaking from the top and piddling down when pushed. The old one was putting out a small gusher, the same way.

Funny you should mention five years ago, Diesel911, guess when it turns out I purchased the primer pump I had in my parts cabinet?

It is rare, but some do fail fresh from the box.

It is a random Quality Control issue.

I have experienced this QC failure a dozen times in 29 years.

FYI: By comparison from my personal experience the original factory primer design units fail an average 1 of 25 fresh out of the box or within one year.

if you're gonna have the car a while and want a little bit of bling down in there, you can opt for the monark stainless steel primer pump. but its more costly than those bosch pumps. i have one and i believe it to be a more robust design.

This car isn't going anywhere soon .

Wow I did not know they metal ones were still made, I can remember discussion of them years ago... there was one on the CD I sold, but it looked prehistoric so I didn't really consider keeping it.

Kent sells them for a bit over $30. I have one on my N/A, it replaced the old white plastic one. I liked that it was still "retro" in that you had to screw it open so it matched the function of the old one, with a more robust design.

I don't know if it was mentioned but there is counterfit Bosch Parts out there.

It is a large enough problem that Bosch puts a Holigrapic Sticker even on the Glow Plug Boxes.

X2! I bought two "Bosch" primer pumps via ebay a couple of years ago because the price was unbelievably low. But by the time they arrived, I decided they were probably counterfeit. They didn't come in any official packaging with holograms. I have no way to know for sure if they are fake, but if and when I need to replace my old-school white primer pump, I have decided to NOT use these.

Hmmmm. No holographic effects anywhere on the box mine came in.

I am not sure when I got it, but I suspect it was part of a big batch of parts I ordered when I bought the TD in 2009. I sort of forgot about it, so when later I actually needed one I bought one locally and this one sat on the shelf. Came across it this summer and threw it into my emergency kit in the trunk.
