ok, pulled my head today and I think this is my problem but needed some community opinions.
symptoms..
1) loud noise from cylinder 5
2) fluid squirting from between head and block can be seen with a flashlight
3) no lose of power, coolant, or any other issues except loud (exhaust?) noise
4) didnt over heat, drove 50 miles home in such condition.
after seeing issue #2, i risked it with no other evidence and removed the head. This is what i found, and im pretty confident this was my problem.

should i get the head examined since i already have it removed? im leaning toward yes..
any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Yes, that looks like a failed head gasket.

90% odds the valve guides are worn beyond spec = yes, have the head serviced.

any idea as to what might have caused this?

I wonder if you have coolant in your oil? My cylinder walls did'nt look like that when we opened our engine, but then maybe ours sat long enough? I think that if coolant gets in your oil...you want to get it out of your engine asap, and away from bearing surfaces. Seems to me, someone mentioned that because coolant is heavier, when you pull the oil drain plug...you can see the coolant come out first followed by the oil.

How many miles on this engine?

there was no overwhelming evidence of coolant in the oil and no loss of performance..nothing other than a very loud air sucking sound, and visually was able to see air shooting from the area where there is a whole in the head gasket.
no idea how many miles are on the motor; the car was in an accident before i owned it, and Ive been told the motor isn't correct for the car, and the odometer was broken for a couple years, at least. the odometer reads 272k miles, and as worked for the last 3+ years. Ive owned the since '07.

when i drained the oil for this repair, there wasn't any coolant in the oil, but very minimal amount of oil was in the coolant.

Thats good news! I had it lucky that way too...oil in the coolant No coolant in the oil. I wonder if at a certain age or mileage these headgaskets get hard and dried out and crack? Being the cause, don't know...could be other things. We ended up having to have the head resurfaced cause of warpage (drove too long that way?)...also found a broken valve guide and redid all the exhaust guides+ full valve job. Apparently oil/coolant mixture turns to acid and eats the bottom end bearings?
