Mercedes Benz Vin Number
I have had numerous failures from everyone who has tried to pull up my vin number. It is the same on the title as displayed in the car. Do you have any ideas or help as to what might be the issues on this???

Can you be any more specific? I know sometimes I have had trouble reading embossed VINs....just wasn't clear what a particular character was.

Are you putting WDB in front of it?

It could be a Euro thing if it is not original for U.S import. I've had issues with mine.

Yes, I was putting the WDB in front of the read out. Although, they only usually want everything, but that read to them. I had trouble getting it inspected for a title on account of this. They kind of thought I was giving them a stolen title or something. It's kind of pain. It's the first time I have ever dealt with something like it!

Post some photos of the car, so we can see if its a euro model. See if the vin on the door jamb and firewall match the title.

I had a BMW850 imported from Japan, the insurance company and DMV insisted that the vin was not real even though it was the same on the title, all panels and firewall. Finally presented the car to them and said use what ever number you want and they accepted it. PITA going through it.

VIN = 17
I need a refresher, but I recall the rules you see on Carfax when inputing a VIN, are that a VIN is a combo of 17 letters and/or numbers of which there two or three letters that are never used. Can't remember which letters those are. Do the letters and numbers in your VIN total 17?

Is this the 83 listed in your signature? Earlier cars (79 and earlier I think) used a vin format like 123123120xxxxxx which will not work for many DMV systems or the EPC.

I had some problems registering my 74 benz, same deal. Car doesnt exist, vins arent like that, we have no record, ect. Some additional steps to register, but ultimately things worked out.
Also, ive discovered personally the older the car, the more inaccurate the carfax. Especially when you are an enthusiast and probably owned quite a few similar year cars of the same make. In one circumstance, carfax listed an 83 300d i owned as totalled at 220k miles or so, and also listed the same car earlier at 310k miles in for general service. In fact i owned an 82 300d which had been rear ended and wrecked, but carfax mixed up the two cars. I consider it a waste of money for anything over 10 years old or past dealership repairs

Yes, it has 17 items in the vin number, and it's an '83. I am not for sure the month & day it was made? It was purchased here in the US. There is no problem on it's registration now, because they went ahead an registered it ok, after doing much checking. They didn't tell me where all they went or what they did. Then the Highway Patrol verified all the id information on the car with the title. There is actually no issue with the registration. The issue is with parts suppliers and the dealer's, as well. They all immediately want to know the vin number. When they hit a blank, it short circuits the help quite abruptly! I don't know about the carfax that was mentioned, because I never have pursued that even at the purchase time on the car. I am sure there is a answer out there somewhere, but I am definitely not sure how to find out about it??

That's probably the reason mine is not showing up, because it was made in 05/'83 right there in the middle. I do have better chances with it in the state and city where it was initially sold by a Mercedes Benz dealer.

Rebe-
Would providing the VIN be helpful to this thread?

I would think if you found the dealership who sold the car initially, it would be a good starting point. But maybe also contacting MBUSA might provide some info also. mercedes-benz.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/74/session/L3RpbWUvMTM5NzQyMjI1MC9zaWQvZjlBSFZJUmw%3D .
