'98 E-300TD No open door courtesy Lights

I am troubleshooting a problem where when opening the doors no courtesy lights come on. The overhead courtesy lights work fine with the switches just not with door opening. I have checked all fuses I can find and no resolution. Where are the door contact switches and what/where is the control module?

Re-program the overhead lights to change their operating modes.

The door contact switches on a W210 are on the door jamb just below the door strike.

However it is not a direct connection like on the older models. The switches feed into a CAN bus module. A message is placed on the CAN bus to direct the lights to come on, and another module applies power to the lights. Probably a different module for the front and rear lights (SAM modules?)

On the overhead light console there are 4 buttons
"light in rear of car" at top center
"car with doors open" at middle left
"light with open book" at middle right
"light" by itself at the bottom

Top center button is self explanatory, this turns on and off the rear dome light independently.

The middle left button is the "dome lights with doors" mode. If you push this button with a door open the front and rear lights should turn on. If you push it again the lights will go off and stay off permanently. I think you have to have a door open to make this take effect.

The middle right button is the map light, the little spotlight on the passenger side.

The bottom button is the front and rear dome lights manual on/off.
