Sniff, sniff...watched my first Benz drive off

Bought Milo, my 92 300D and my first MB, back in 2003, with 137,000 miles on it for $5900. Nothing wrong with it....lady who owned it simply wanted to get an Acura MDX.

Knew absolutely nothing....I remember complaining to Firestone that they forgot to change my oil because if was still black! And I remember thinking that, now that I owned a Mercedes, I wouldn't have to worry about car repairs as much!! haha (It replaced a Honda Accord.)

Had thought I would keep it forever....and invested in it accordingly. But things change....and, my wife's current 3 MB limit being a reasonable cap, I had to sell Milo to make room for Winston.

My only consolation is it is staying within the extended family....will be my best friend's son's daily driver. Just graduated college, got married, begins a teaching job in the fall....will drive Milo for his 45 minute commute.

I'm sure I'm not the only one around here who ended up selling his sentimentally-attached-to first Benz. It was my daily driver, then my daughter's, the mine again, the my son's. For 120,000 miles it served our family well.

Milo spent it's first eleven years in Bucks County, PA, then moved to TX with me, then to RI....now it heads back to Bucks County!

... Sure. My first MB was the infamous 9 second 82 SD I had to give it away to a good friend who helped me clear my yard for the city... I see it often, and I'm the only wrench it ever sees.

Imagine how I feel now that I am offering my 240D up for sale that I've owned since Day 1 and put every one of it's 350K miles on it (my wife helped a little). You can really bond with a car after 30-some years and doing nearly all of the work on it. You kind of get to know it pretty well.

Are you selling it after all?

Well, I'll put it this way. I have it listed for sale along with my ponton. It just makes no sense to me to have four cars with two drivers who hardly drive anymore. But I really don't want to sell any of them, but I need to be a little bit practical.

I hear ya, but the money saved by moving an old car out is preferable to the drain of insurance, annual license tags, battery costs, maintenance, more parts breaking, etc. After I sold my C3 Corvette, 35 years ago, I have mostly had just one car. It's way, way cheaper......and that's always been the deciding factor.

That's me too nowadays, Len. I put only 2,700 miles in one year on the used 06 E320 CDI I bought in SanAntonio last year. 400 of those miles were driving it back home after buying it!

For the last five years or so it is not unusual for me to fill up the 240D once a year. Many years it's been driven 500 miles or less. The ponton isn't far behind.

My first car is currently sitting in a Volvo P1800 specialist's yard. It has had extensive rust repair, bodywork and paint. Still miss that car dearly, but who knows... maybe one day I'll purchase it back.
