After you strip out the trans, what are you doing with the chassis?

Winmutt's gettin' a 5-speed 240 wagon? Awesome! I tried to buy one of those for six months before finally ending up with a 300D instead. I remember one 240 that I looked at made use of one of the blanks Volvo put in the dash to install a "Self-Destruction" switch -- a (presumably dead) electrical switch, screwed into one of the blank plates in the dash, labeled "Self Destruct". It was awesome.

Are you gonna install IPD anti-sway bars?

my wife had a 96 850 auto for a while. comfortable car with reasonable power and good interior room. bad fuel economy and stock radio PITA factor if the anti theft thing happens. fortunately the dealer will tell you the radio code based on how cool they might be

Then get a 740 or 940 Volvo. Or convince the wife on the 240. If she rides in it, she may change her mind (women seem to love how secure they feel driving them, even if they initially aren't impressed by the looks).

The 850s had a lousy rep in Volvo circles, some years are better than others and you do NOT want the automatic.

Avoid the S70 / V70 first generation like the plague.

A clean, stick 240 wagon from a southern state isn't going to hang around long at that price. I wish I had the readies myself.

If anyone is interested, my Father in law has 2 wagons, a 240 5 speed and 740 auto. Both high miles and been sitting for a few years. 240 needs a clutch. I bet both could be had for a less than fair price. Both run decent. I personally have driven both of them on a few 1500+ mile round trips in the past 5 years. Let me know if you are interested.
