Fuel injector leak
1987 300TDT
I started up the wagon yesterday and was surprised by a rough idle. When I looked under the hood I noticed a spray coming from the top of the injector bolt (see the pictures). From reading some of the message boards it seems that the o-rings and crush washers are often the culprit, and that a special 32-point socket is needed to remove the injectors and to change them. This doesn't seem like too difficult a job. However, the fact that the leak is at the TOP of the bolt makes me wonder. Doesn't this suggest that it is the bolt and line that maybe have a crack in them? If it is was leaking from where the injector meets the pump casing I would be more quick to agree that it's the o-ring and washer. What do you think? Thanks! Update:
I removed the line, cleaned off the end and inspected it, didn't see anything unusual. I put the line back on and fired it up. The leak was significantly reduced to only a slow sweat (originally was a spray) and the rough idle was gone. I tried tightening the nut a little more but when I started the car afterwards I found the leak was back to a spray! Any thoughts? Does this suggest there is a crack somewhere? Will I need a new line? Or a new injector? |

Quote:
While that can occasionaly happen anyway the most commone reason is when the Clamps that that go between the Fuel Injection Hard Lines are missing or in the wrong Place. The Nut on the Hard Line can split and not hold it down well. The above are not the only reasons. The fact that the line is spraying is a good indication that the leak is on the Fuel Injection side and not the Fuel Supply side. The Rubber O-rings on the Delivery Valves are on the Fuel Supply Side and only have something like 18 psi of pressure to hold back so I have not read of them spraying.
