Injector Lines Breaking
I've had three injector lines break at the fitting in the last six months. I have plastic clips that hold the lines together but I heard that there is also something that fits over the connectors on both ends. Anyone know of these??

Stan,
There are a few "wrap around" clamps that hold the lines together, and there are also metal brackets - one big one for #1-3, and five little ones for #4-6. The metal brackets have two parts, a rubber cushion (sp?) and a plastic clip that clamps the line to the cushion. The rubber part gets hard as a rock after a few years, and the plastic clips usually get brittle and break. You should replace all the rubber stuff (the new ones are nice and soft!) and replace the plastic clips too (the old ones will probably break anyway). Total cost is maybe $20. It's a lot easier with the intake manifold off, so if you have the common "oil" leak at the base of the #2 intake runner, you might as well do it all at once. BTW, I've never heard of the metal lines breaking, are you sure your engine is running good, i.e. no rough idle? If the motor mounts are more than ~100kmi old they're likely due for replacement. I had a similar experience with the fittings on injector lines on an old VW Pickup with the 1.6l diesel. It appears that it happens from age. The lines were replaced and there have been no problems related to this again.

Dave,
Do you have the part numbers for all those clips? Mine are all broken and I have the intake manifold almost off... one reclacitrant bolt under the #5 runner If there are any that don't attach to brackets, e.g. that bundle the lines, details would be appreciated. Sixto, here you go:
601-078-04-86 - rubber shim, to metal bracket (trim to fit 1 or 2 lines) 603-078-01-41 - 2-line clip, to metal bracket (also used for single lines) 601-078-20-41 - 3-line clip, to metal bracket 601-078-26-41 - Standalone 3-line clip to "bundle" the lines (does not attach to a bracket) All should be under $1 each. Dave,
How many each per car? When can you come down to San Jose to install them in my car? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 81 300SD (it's back) |

From memory, I think you need:
8 rubber shims 2 3-line clips 6 2-line clips 2 or 3 standalone clips (?) Sorry, I won't be in that area anytime soon. I should open up my own shop, huh! |
