Make sure the valves are adjusted....don't connect the glows give it a shot of starting fluid and it should start....I did this with a w115 motor I pulled to check to confirm it ran before I installed it...either is bad, but as long as the glows aren't on...it shouldn't case an issue.....fyi....don't believe the speedo too...

I ran a junkyard engine on the ground first before installing it. I had a fuel can slightly below the engine. Didn't matter since I pumped the hand pump until fuel circulated from the back thru the return hose (also down in fuel can) and got all air out. If you have the old white hand pump, replace with a newer, smaller black one. The old type often leak in air.
While the injector was out, did you actuate the glow plugs (relay stays on ~25 sec) and look down into the pre-chamber and see the glow plug glowing bright? If the engine was last run out of fuel, it could have a lot of air in the system. First purge air from the low-pressure side (~12 psig outlet of lift pump, which is inlet to IP) by cracking the main fuel filter bolt while pumping (per manual). Then crack each fitting at the top of each injector and crank the engine over until fuel drips out of each high-pressure tube. Tighten and it should fire, assuming you have good compression (>300 psig) and all glow plugs are hot. In my case the $300 JY engine proved to be excellent (>400 psig all cyl and zero blow-by). |

Thanks all, I was finally able to get her started. I was just giving up on the bleeding of the fuel system too early. I thought as soon as the fuel was being returned to the tank at a good volume that I was done. I know a lot better now and feel a little dumb about it. I primed as much as I could and then cracked the fuel lines (all 5) at the injector. Held the throttle at full and cranked. As I was cranking I closed the fuel lines as they started to leak out. A few seconds later I hit the plugs and she fired up( with a little struggle and a giant cloud of smoke and soot) but she did fire up.
I was ecstatic about my running engine until I looked at the front of the engine while at a pretty rough idle. The balancer was wobbling quite a bit, so I started to think it was just out of round. Upon further investigation, the HB bolt was loose and one woodruff key was sheered in half and the second was missing completely. My mood took a 180* for the worst. The HB key slots look fine no damage to my eye, however the key slot on the crank where the one was sheered off is wallered out a bit. Now I am searching for that fix and hopefully it doesn't involve removing the crank or sourcing a new one. |

Hey there are lines off the main vaccum line one gos to a bunch of lines and one leads into the cab to the ignition. Unplug that line from the main ( closes to the front of the car ) and it will start then plug it back in to shut off the motor
