The fuel gauge in my daily driver (a '93 190E with transplanted diesel drivetrain) is very "jumpy", twitching around almost as soon as the needle moves off the full mark. It will sometimes jump between 1/4 and 3/4 tankful.

Is there a common cause for this condition? I'm tempted to think that the problem is in the fuel tank sender as opposed to the dash, but I'm certainly open for suggestions.
