Motor mount question

Replacing the motor mounts and the transmission mount tomorrow on my W123. Should I replace the motor mounts first then the transmission mount, or the transmission mount first then the motor mounts. Or does it not matter

Thanks,

Glenn

I don't see how that would matter. The only thing the transmission mount would be much simpler to do so if you wanna do that first and build up your confidence..

I can't think of a reason why it would make a difference. I think I would do the transmission mount first but that's a very soft preference.

In the FSM... there are directions for making a gauge to make sure the engine is located properly.... so as long as you end up in the correct place the order of replacing can be determined by ease and safety...

Kind of what I thought..... Does not matter the order. I think I will clean and put some PB blaster on the motor mount bolts and while they are soaking, change the transmission mount and go from there...........

Did you get lemforder or phoenix mounts? If not, no point in changing them...

With this gauge, if it shows improper alignment, what do you adjust to fix it?

I believe the gauge is meant to make sure the engine is free floating on the mounts it is on... not have ' pre loaded ' condition of some of the mounts... so taking the engine weight off the mounts and adjusting them.. or leveraging the engine to a place where the gauge indicates proper placement I assume it the methodology involved....

Well, new mounts are in, sounds quieter and seems to shift a little nicer. The old mounts did not look too bad, but they must have as the new mounts made a noticeable difference.

Next project is going to be flex discs and driveshaft center bearing and support (ugh).

Good they are phoenix brand. I had uro mounts on both my cars, same as febi in my book....yes they worked but the problem was...they are to soft, so they collapse as soon as the engine sits on them.

I looked in the 126 FSM and couldn't find the gauge directions either by using the menu or browsing pdf files.

Separate issue: I replaced relatively new Febi motor mounts with new Lemforder mounts. The Febi were collapsed after not many miles. In fact, they were probably collapsed upon initial install because the top oil cooler line was damaged by the PS pump almost immediately. I blamed the lines (Tructec). Lesson learned: remember to check clearance before starting & buy a better brand.

The engine sits higher with the Lemforder mounts and the oil lines are no where near the PS pump. The Lemforder came with blue dot markings specified in the FSM and looked like the MBX logo may have been ground off.

Unfortunately, I mostly find URO and Meyle trans mounts listed for sale. Does anyone have a link to a better mount? If so, send me an email.

I am not sure why the Sellers of Lemfoerder Motor Mounts don't sell the Transmission Mounts. I have seen the Lemfoerder Transmission Mounts on UK eBay.

The Lemforder Mounts for mine also had the Blue Dot and you could see where the Mercedes Star was ground off they also have the Phoenix Logo on them. Which means they are the same as the Mounts you get from the dealer which are made by Phoenix.
