Hard cold starting from lack of fuel when car parked on down slope
I am having issues starting my '85 300d when it's parked in my driveway with the nose pointing down - my driveway has a 15-20 degree slope.
When I park with the nose facing up, no issues. I find this weird as it seems counter-intuitive: How can I not be getting fuel when gravity is pushing it toward the pump? I would expect starvation when the nose is pointed up. Yet when pointing down I crank with nothing coming out the exhaust and it starts like it's just had the injector lines off and the fuel has to come back up to the injectors. The injectors were renewed two months ago (exchange ones cleaned/balanced by Greazzer). All the return lines are therefore new. So is the short line from the main filter to the lift pump. The cigar hose was renewed four years ago. The filters were put on in May. It runs and idles fine, otherwise. Any ideas? This happened when I had my old, high mileage 300sd many years ago but for the life of me I don't recall what the fix was.

Perhap check the tank breather, could be something unusual such as weight of fuel pushing air out of a partial blockage.
Sounds a bit crazy but not too difficult to check.
