transmission shift linkage w123 300TD

Short question: what is the correct attachment for the shift linkage?

My 1982 w123 300TD has a 1985 engine inexpertly installed, ensuring a lifetime of puzzle solving.

The puzzle of the day involves the shift linkage. The gear range indicator reads about half a gear high. So when I'm in D the gear selector is in between D and N.

I attempted to adjust the linkage today, but it's already at the end of its threads. At the non-adjustable end of the linkage, it looks like it could attach in two different places. Is mine in the wrong position? If not, why did I run out of adjustment threads on the linkage?

Thanks all!
