Revived my not so little clacker today......

but the tach doesn't work at first....?. I left it sitting for about four months or so after it ran out of diesel (long story). Bled it bled it bled it; wouldn't start for me, and just left it, driving the blazer I had just bought. Randomly tried to start it, and it fired right up.. Since it seemed like it had a bit of moisture inside from sitting so long, maybe I just need to dry it all out?

At least the beast came back alive.....I love this car, but I love my new 4wd, too Maybe the benz is just jealous......it worked perfectly before

the car in question

new winter/tow thingey/4wd toy

Now i hate you even more. Look at that truck, ridiculous. All 4 fender arches should be rusted away, the frame should be cracked and rusty, and there should be a sign in the window asking 3500 because it ran 5 years ago and 99.5% percent of these trucks in the northeast were rusted out and crushed during the clinton years

1000 bucks for that is a steal. Even without a drivetrain people would be asking more here based on body alone.

A good friend of mine bought an 84' GMC Sierra, 6.2 Litre Detroit Diesel from a farmer for the low price of $3700. All four fenders were rusted through and there was a fence post in the drivers front.

I looked, he looked and that was the lowest priced one we could find.

soooooo.......any input on the tach issue?. I think I'm just gonna let it dry out with a little heater inside the shop. I hate to admit it, but I whacked the dashboard and it came to life. I guess that's the old myth of german cars not liking to sit too long.

and for the blazer nuts out there. It's an 87 with 122K. Looking for new wheels/tires because I got a little burnout happy right after I bought it. Otherwise, it's fully functional

can't be the OVP.......it's a diesel. think it's just moisture. tach comes and goes, and the sunroof is the only other switch not working. all in time

Not true, the diesels also have OVP relays in the later years (I believe 1984+) that run the EGR computer. In those years the EGR computer also drives the tach.

You didn't post the year of your SD so I'm not sure if it has the old or the new style tach setup.

The old ones use the Tach amplifier under teh hood and have a pickup on the harmonic balancer. The tach amps frequently go bad and fail intermittently as well in these setups.

The later ones have the pickup on the flywheel and are driven, as I mentioned, by the EGR computer. Most frequent failure in these systems is the OVP, either the relay itself, or the fuse on top of the unit..

it's an 84. my bad....no ovp....It's gotta be moisture. No other reason things would quit all of a sudden, and then come back as I let it run with the heater on. Just my guess, though. I'll pull the sunroof switch, clean it up, grease it, and watch it work again......Love this simple thing

They why did you ask if your going to dismiss possible issues without checking them? OVP relays are known to get bad solder joints in them and cause intermittent issues. I guarantee your car has one, they are not just a gasser thing....

I only asked because I like to feed the trolls....... And it was only moisture; after it dried out everything worked just like it should and had.
