The last year that Mercedes produced a Diesel without electronic engine management?
Hi all, I have owned over 30 Mercedes in my life and have had many W123 Diesels..... I even had a 300D stretch limo for 8 years...... My question is: What was the last year that a Mercedes diesel sedan was produced that did not have electronic engine management controls?
I am leaning towards a 2003-plus CDI but would gladly take a late 90s W210 diesel if it didn't have a computer dictating to my engine. I have an ML500 that's been a electronics nightmare and though it now has 238,000 miles, I would rather have a vehicle with less electronics. I own a smart-phone so technology bells and whistles are not a requirement in my car..... I've looked at the W-124 diesels but are not partial to them as I already have a 1995 E320 wagon. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated....... Thank you all in advance.

If you are preparing for an EMP then you'd probably be better off with the pre-1983 Mercedes diesels.
Those are all vacuum and mechanical spinning bits. From the W201 and W124 times Mercedes started to add in electrickery on their diesels

Indeed - may be B I C Y C L E would also be an option?
Don't you just love those "prepper" programs on Discovery? (Actually Discovery seems to be more Alaska mad at the moment - but the same sort of thing in a way I guess)

Oh Stretch, life for you in Europe must be so quaint. Don't you know that bikes now shift with electricity:
Dura Ace Di2 Ha ha, just teasing. Campy has their own version: Campagnolo EPS - ELECTRONIC POWER SHIFT You wouldn't want to get a tired thumb during your daily exercise. [sorry for the offtopic divergence]

II think 1984 was the last mb without ANY electronic engine systems, but it was just rack position monitor for the egr system in 85.
The idle is controlled electronically in the w124. In 96 the ip is electronically actuated, drive by wire, no more mechanical linkage... The w211 gets more complicated from there.

Non-electronic diesels

Another choice would be the 1991-93 (years?) 300D2.5 with the OM602 Turbo engine. Same removable electronics. Jeremy

In my opinion, 84 is the last. 85 if you make some modifications. After 84, the EPA started strong arming auto manufactures into more emissions nonsense.

Not much if any on the 85SD. That car always starts as long as synthetic is in the crank case.

FWIW, even the W123s have some electronics in the glow-plug timer-relay. But that unit is easy enough to bypass.
