Rear Hat Shelf
Has anyone recovered the rear hat shelf? (don't laugh that is what the Mercedes owners manual calls it). This is about the worse looking thing on my 79 300SD and I would like to know how it is removed, and has anyone had success recovering/replacing it.

I had the one in my dads 76 450 sel redone at a local upolstery shop two years ago. It was rather simple to remove from what the guy told me. By the way, he charged about $150 to do it. Matched the orignal color and did made the first aid kit door look right too. It took him less than a day to do it.

Some call it the parcel shelf. Check here for the material (German package shelf velour, listed under upholstery/cloth/velour) http://www.worlduph.com/material.htm

I asked them to send me a sample today of the blue to see if it matched the blue in the SEC. You really can't tell anything from looking at color samples on a website.

1) Remove rear seat bottom (press in two metal tabs in foot well)
2) Locate and loosen 2 (1 per side) 10mm (IIRC) nits from studs that hold the seat back in place. 3) Pull seat back towards the front of the car, enough to clear thoes studs 4) With your hand, hit (upwards) the bottom of the seat back frame to pop the top of the seat back free of the the retaining device holding the seat back in place. 5) Slide the parcel/hat shelf out towards the front of the car. That is how its done on the 107 SL-C, it should be the same on the W116.
