Wink Temp gauge/heat on 82 240d not working, plug to block heater gone...

We live in northern vt. It's cold-takes a couple hours of driving to have any significant heat come out of the thing. Was thinking it was thermostat related?
Also can't locate any evidence of the block heater cord or plug. My 83 had one...
I bought a ****ty magnetic one that attaches to the underside of oil pan-sucky-works ok. I just put a new set of glow plugs in-that helped with below zero starts...still pretty reluctant.
If any one wants to send me a list of to do's related to these two issues, that'd be swell. Then my 2 year old could stop needing a down sleeping bag to ride with me!
Thanks fellow enthusiasts!
