Wink Temp gauge/heat on 82 240d not working, plug to block heater gone...

We live in northern vt. It's cold-takes a couple hours of driving to have any significant heat come out of the thing. Was thinking it was thermostat related?
Also can't locate any evidence of the block heater cord or plug. My 83 had one...
I bought a ****ty magnetic one that attaches to the underside of oil pan-sucky-works ok. I just put a new set of glow plugs in-that helped with below zero starts...still pretty reluctant.
If any one wants to send me a list of to do's related to these two issues, that'd be swell. Then my 2 year old could stop needing a down sleeping bag to ride with me!
Thanks fellow enthusiasts!

... if you need more than a few minutes of driving in the car to get heat... yeah I'd start with the thermostat.
if a block heater is installed in the car, it will be in front of the starter on the side of the block. if there is NOT one, get a coolant heater. the oil pan heaters are nearly useless...

no heat, block heater fixes

Simple fix for no heat is usually thermostat replacement. As for block heater, see the photos for MB freeze plug block heater, & connector/cord. (OE or aftermarket replacement cords are available) The stock block heater is OK but don't count on it to heat the block quickly or very warm. You need to plug it in shortly after you shut off the engine. It heats the coolant, but does not circulate it. It counts on convection (no pump). There are some serviceable aftermarket coolant heaters that circulate (pump or percolate) the hot coolant throughout the block (that's the claim, anyway), and they are available in different wattages ("HotStart", "Kat's Five Star", and others).
