1987 MD 300dt tranny into 91 MB 300D
Greetings,
question probably asked and answered a few times but could not find the answer. Could pick up a used 722.317 tranny out of a 1987 300DT and would like to know if I could use it in my 1991 30D 2.5T which uses the 722.418. Advice greatly appreciated. Cheers |

It should work. You'll need a couple things though. I did this with a w123. The 722.3 and 722.4 are the same length so the driveshaft will work just fine but the below items will need to be acquired from the 87 car in order to use the transmission
1. NSS wiring harness from '87 car (Can even be a 300E if thats easier to find) -722.4 uses a "flat" plug instead of a "round" plug like the 722.3 trans. If you look up the NSS online for your car vs the 87 you can probably see the difference. 2. Tranny cooler hard lines from the 87 300D (300E might even work? Not 100% sure though) For the wiring harness, you could clip the cord and join it to your car's harness but that is kinda sloppy. They aren't that hard to remove from the car so it's easier to just to pull the whole thing, plus it's cleaner and once less wire connection to possibly fail.

many thanks for your very helpful reply. As the price of the used unit with about 110K miles is very attractive I can have it checked out and ready when needed. Cheers

It's more work than that. Your .128 uses smaller yokes and flex disks than a .133. Hopefully it's as easy as swapping a 722.4 yoke onto the 722.3. Otherwise you'll probably need the prop shaft and diff from a .133, or a hybrid prop shaft.
Weren't we talking about a ACC PBU a year or so ago? Sixto MB-less |

Confirmed - the 722.4 output flange is a direct replacement for the 722.3 output flange.
