Loud Howling, Erratic Speedo 84 300D

Merrily driving along in the 84 300D at about 45 mph when all of there sudden there was a consistent loud howling sound coming from the left side of the instrument cluster....and I could feel a vibration coming through the dash. At the same time, the speedometer began to bounce around between 40 and 60 and eventually settled around 100 with the needle visibly vibrating the whole time. Then as soon as my speed dropped to 20, the noise went away and speedo function returned to normal. Everything fine for the rest of my 15 minute trip.

So what's going on?

Your speedo cable is bad

It could be the cable, or the bearings in the speedo itself could need lube. It sounds like there is interference between the magnet and the drum that moves the needle. A bad cable shouldn't send the speed to 100 MPH.

In most cases, it IS the speedo cable that's bad. However, it can *sometimes* be the speedo head itself. Case in point:

When it's very cold in the morning (well, California's version of cold) my '95, which has an electric speedo (no cable) will display the same symptoms for a few miles, then go away for the rest of the day. I figure it has something to do with the combination of wear / tolerances, and lube hardening / displacement that causes the noise & needle bounce until things warm up a bit. I will say it is an impressively LOUD howling noise too!

EDIT: Rscurtis beat me to the punch by a few minutes. (I type slowly.)

It was pretty cold (18F) and the car had sat for about a week not being driven.

I had this when it got really "cold" in sunny S.C. in my DD last winter. Really high pitched whine ... which increased or slowed down with the MPH, respectively, and around 20 MPH, it stopped. I just removed my cluster, unscrewed the speedo, put a drop or 2 of oil and it has worked fine since then.

My experience has been the speedo cable. Usually worse in cold weather. Sometimes a little lube in the cable helps, other times, it needs to be replaced.

My girlfriends 201 and the 201 I sold my friend both whined when cold then went away after a few minutes of Driving. A fresh cable in my girlfriends car sorted hers out, my friend dropped some ATF on his cable and it helped.

I guess I did not read thoroughly, the jumping to 100mph is the bizarre part. May be the speedo itself.

Haha....did it again...this time the needle moved around so violently that it BROKE OFF...simply sitting there in the instrument cluster.

So I downloaded a speedometer app!

That happens due to the resistance building up in the cable. It is like twisting a rubber band up and letting it go. Remember those toy prop planes we had as kids?

Show it to your passengers, and exclaim with great pride about how your diesel is SO damn fast, it twisted the speedo needle right off!

Selling it in a couple of months....I'll make that part of my sales pitch! That and that it gets 50 mpg....and that it will go a million miles.

currently listening to this sound during my morning commute. I've been reading that a few drops of atf fluid will cure it. This makes sense because the transmission drips fluid down into the speedocable, unfortunately the cable is unable to carry it all the way to the other end of the cable.

There is no need to buy another cable, learned the hardway on this one.
