Shop "changed" oil, didn't add any, motor blew up. . .

. . . 1,900 miles later. Yep, car was running fine, shop drained but didn't replace oil and motor blew up nineteen hundred miles later.

From article:

"VW and Audi recently declared that oil consumption of up to a quart every 650 miles is “normal” on some of their vehicles"

I had a 616 motor with horrific blowby and burned a quart every 400 miles, but it was peppier than the rebuilt engine I replaced it with or any other 616 that I had driven.

Some VW dealers have been rolling out that line to get out of warranty work on TDis for quite a while.

The actual Mercedes spec for allowable oil consumption in the older diesels is quite startling as well, IIRC a quart per 450 miles or something like that.

Interesting article.

I wouldn`t have thought about the rods stretching slightly on a fully warmed up engine, compared to one that really never get`s to operating range. Then driven hard and up to operating condition causing the problem mentioned in the article.
I can see why the guy would blame the shop, since the engine did not use oil before on such a low mile engine.

I almost always check my oil first thing, in what ever vehicle I drive.
Also when on a trip, I will check it after stopping, for fuel, eats, potty stop etc.... just to see where it is at and to give the engine a visual for any other things that may pop up.

I taught my daughter to check the oil before starting the engine...or the car would stay home. She got the message, and today 20 some years later, she has that habit to watch what is going on under the hood.

Wouldn't that car have a light that comes on to indicate low oil level? Before catastrophe.

Interesting article. He was on a long trip, he should of checked his oil more he may have caught it. I think most cars use more on long trips. Good for him they insurance paid. But a car will not run that long with no oil in it. 1900 miles?

Yeah, why no light, good point!

An Idiot Light.

Hopefully the insurance paid for new glasses too if he needed them too or a new hearing aid if there was a buzzer.

Heck why not?

The light did come on.
He pressed on, though. "Undeterred."

I don't see how you can blame the shop for that. Maybe they didn't change the oil, that is a possibility. But to say they changed the oil and didn't refill it, just is not possible. You say you drove it 1900 miles with no oil. Pretty hard to get a quarter of a mile on an engine with no oil. Got use your head. In 1900 miles you needed fuel 3 or 4 times at least. Best learn now to check that oil when you fill it up. It didn't just fall out of there. Oh well, all it costs is another junk engine and install and you will be on your way. Buy one at Pull a Part for about $150.00 and stick it in. If you can't change your own oil, you'll probably have to pay for someone to do that also.

That and not checking his oil in 1900 miles. Some people shouldn't be driving.

That's true, but as my MB mechanic says, " In the 1950s and 1960s, oil was SCHEI** and now with the synthetics, it's much better.

Which is also true. Additives to dyno oil have made a big difference.

Interesting, its a liter of oil for every tank of fuel. Makes sense, if you add oil at every fuel stop. Loose more oil than that, and the engine is at risk.

650 miles per quart...that's horrible...sounds just like VW.

My 275k mile OM601 loses nothing between 5,000 mile 1 year oil changes...

All the M112's I maintain use virtually nothing either over 5-6k miles between changes.

My father ran across a Rolls Royce in the deserts of Saudi Arabia... it needed minor repairs, and was up and running... until the first fill up, the car was down 3 quarts...
tear down of the motor showed everything in spec, so he contacted RR... their response was first "can we see the vehicle?" apparently it was a one off build for a shiek or something... value off the charts, and the motor was hand built to seep oil as the car ran to provide effective longevity in desert conditions.
