I haven`t hear of these coming apart all that often...but I think it was AH-Kay that
had one come apart. I may have been on his SDL also.

I have never changed one, so don`t know the process you have to go through.

IIRC the front cover has to come off to replace the oil pump chain. Are you up for that? Is the engine out of the car?

603 without front cover -

603 with front cover -

Removing the front cover without pulling the head and without damaging the head gasket isn't easy but it's worth pursuing with the engine out of the car which it pretty much has to be to replace the oil pan. Or do you mean just the side compartment?

I had an oil pump chain snapped in a 300SDL while cruising at 70+mph. Rod bearings and pistons starved of oil and engine seized. It is a single chain rather than a double chain like the OM617. I rehab'ed the engine, changed the chain but not the guide rail. The guide rail was plastic and is very durable.

The engine front plate needs to come off to replace guide rail and loop chain. I am not sure whether you can buy loop chain. I crimped the chain in place as it comes with a master link. I now replace the chain if I had a need to replace the pan. I err on the side of caution.

Another caution note: Fill the oil pump with vaseline before installing. The oil uptake may not work well on the OM60X engine when oil is drained completely from the pump.
