OM642 glow plug replacement
Well my wife's nearly 2 years of issue free driving on the ML has hit a snag. Got the lingering glow light, CEL, and P0675 (#5 glow plug failure).
The timing is pretty good, we've hit "almost summer" here in Columbia and so it is still starting ok. However when I went to search for how to go about replacing the glow plug it appears that the chances of it breaking off in the head are very high based on how many sets of tools are out there for extracting the broken GP. So how many of you have had experience with changing one of these out? I contacted our local dealer yesterday and they said, we'll have to get back to you and I'm still waiting for a call back. Anyone?

That is what is making me concerned. If it was just as simple as lubricate, warm engine, and limit the torque, I would be willing to try. But the tales I have read of them snapping off at very low torques has me scared to even put a wrench on it.
Also I have read that GP failure on these engines is bad while running, which is not like the older IDIs. CDIs use the plugs during the drive cycle for DPF regen and having a failed GP can cause accelerated carbon buildup in that cylinder.

Only a few have a OM642 so I would not expect a lot of info.

Can't wait to see it. I bet they come out like butter. Knocking on wood. Did they put ceramic plugs in those?

Yep ceramic plugs, which makes it all that much more risky...plugs are like 6 inches long and have 3/4 of the length as the element.

Here is a pic of a GL320 CDI Glow Plug. I think these are 10mm and thinner they the GPs on other Engines. It also looks a lot longer.
Hopefully Mercedes applied some to the threads and maybe the body of the Plug before they installed them. Glow Plug Reamer? I have seen them on eBay in a set but have never looked for one individually as I don't have a Vehicle that I would need it for. About 3 Years ago one of our Members bought the set of 3 Glow Plug Reamers. It has for the Pencil 617 type, longer 606 type and it had the 10mm Reamer in the set. He did not need the 10mm. If so I hope he sees this thread. If the Cylinder Heads on the OM642 are Aluminum the long skinny Glow Plug looks like it could possibley be more trouble to get out then the OM606 type ones that are 12mm. If the Cylinder Heads are Iron they may come ou easy. People seem to have had better luck removing them when the Engine is hot. That is only partly possible if you have a lot of stuff to remove to get at the Glow Plugs.

1st thing to get before you start the replacement is ... antiseize !
2nd thing would be some Kroil. Proven to be better than PB. Using that the night before is preferred too. Penetrating-Lubricating Oils For touchy items like this ...a rocking move with your ratchet is good. Very slightly tighten.. yes... I said tighten. That helps loosen things up. Very slightly = 1/64th ratchet turn. Loosen 2 or 3 ...64ths .. SPRAY Kroil. Retighten 3/64s. That should loosen things up to get it out. If not, spray and let it soak for ~5 minute. Repeat until they come out easily.

From what I have read, they are less of a problem then 606 plugs.
Here is a video of a 400CDI : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mon6IhRPFsk And here is an un-concluded thread : Changing Glow Plugs on a CDI

Got the quote from the dealer - they will change all 6 and the controller for $1400. Or 1 for $650. Might as well do all 6 and get it over with.
I can't take the risk of breaking her car, with my work schedule and my constant travel out of town for work.

Seems like high cost for job. How many hours are they saying the job will be?

Sorry but $1400 for ~30 minutes work is just plain a ripoff.
