1979 240D: Replacing tensioner and rail

So the engine has got a lot of stuff taken off. It looks sad.
I drained the block by leaving the socket (19mm) and 6" extension attached and allowed the coolant to dribble at a slow pace as I worked where I could.
The coolant missed the starter and ran down the block.
The thermostat housing parts are quite clean.
I left the crankshaft pulley in place. The crank was rotated clockwise to bring the cutaway in front of the lower pin I need to pull to remove the tensioning rail.
I used a 8 x 1.25 x 50mm bolt, one nut, and a spare large washer from the rear shock absorber replacement. This was assembled and tightened into the pin after determining the threads were mostly clean. This assembly fit. Once it was tight, I backed it off a bit to begin tightening the nut. I tightened it about 10 mm before I stopped and wondered at what was going on- it didn't appear to be moving. Then I looked off to the side and there is some sort of template/spacer on the lower part of the engine about 2-3 mm thick, which remained with the pin as I backed it out. I drove it back with a punch, with much relief, and the pin now stood proud of the spacer (?). The wrenching got easier and the pin came out. I removed the bolt from the pin, then pulled both free.
The pin is currently enjoying a luxurious bath in a heated ultrasonic cleaner, my next step is to remove the cam sprocket so I can remove the tensioner rail.

More later

This should be attached to the end of the thread you already have going... so as to not ' orphan' that other one and people not know ' the rest of the story ' later on when it is pulled up from the archives....
