Intake leaking oil - turbo?

I recently noticed a small oil leak at the intake end of the crossover pipe. I've been wanting to take the pipe off to see how much coked oil build -up there was. What I found was plenty of crud but instead of being hard and brittle it was more of a sludge. I was able to remove most of it with a putty knife. So I'm assuming my leak came from the worn out gasket at the end of the pipe since there was also oil sitting on the sludge build-up.

1) What would cause this deposit to remain soft?

2) Could this leak (oil in intake) be a symptom of a bearing leaking in the turbo?

BTW I blocked the EGR about 6 months ago, thanks for any advice- Bryan (1987 300tdt)

If your talking about the black rubbery pipe that goes from the top of the engine to the top of the intake. I've got this problem too. I've been wondering what caused it.

Actually this is the pipe (aluminum ) that crosses over the valve cover from the turbo to the intake manifold, "pipe" is probably not the right term since it's rectangular in cross-section. You might be refering to the breather tube coming from the valve cover on your car??

Bryan,

The sludge in your crossover pipe is pretty normal. Clean everything as best you can with rags and solvent, being careful not to leave any stuff behind that could enter the engine. Replace the seals on each end if necessary. Check again in a few hundred miles and see what you find. If the EGR is blocked, the sludge should be gone. You may still find a thin oily coat over everything, this is either from the turbo shaft seal, or more likely, the breather tube (PCV) from the valve cover to intake elbow. I'm chasing down a similar problem on my car, no definite solution yet. I have very low oil consumption but I get some blue smoke out the back - which isn't normal...

There's a before & after photo of the turbo side of the pipe at this URL, check it out:

gsxr, thanks for the reply. Is there a remedy if the oil is coming from the breather tube. Also do you know what might be involved in correcting the problem if the turbo shaft seal is the culprit - besides $$$ ?

Breather tube - possibly, I'm looking into that now.

Turbo - only solution I know of requires $$$. (More likely $$$$.)
