Hey folks, probably do an engine oil change tonight or tomorrow night, have filters already but unsure what oil to buy.

I want to buy local rather than order and wait, so walmart, autozone, O'reillys, pepboys etc. I'd rather stick to synthetic for my car.

I'm in norcal.

I have researched online and found I need 229.51 Benz spec oil but unsure where to get this (want to avoid dealer $$$).

It is approved oil and best price. Comes in 5 quart jugs for $23.50 here in OH.

I am not certain that Mobil 0W40 is approved for diesels (Check label to see if it mentions 229.51). You need ESP Formula M 5W40. But Mobil have now discontinued that and changed to a new 0W30 oil, but it seems to me that viscosity of the new oil may be too low. So may be best to find another oil with MB229.51 on label. Depending on where you live, it may not be easy to find unless someone has old stock of Mobil1 5W40 ESP. I think Valvoline, and Shell may have equivalents.

I searched around and it seems Castrol Edge synthetic 5W30 is 229.51 and available in some stores locally like O'Reilly's

I've read several sources that state that Valvoline Maxlife ATF can be used in the 722.6 transmission and is an approved oil.

Is this good? I plan on doing the transmission soon too.

Pop your hood. There's likely a Mobil 1 sticker there.

Possibly. But the best bang for your buck to make certain you're using an approved fluid is Shell ATF 134. Get it from a Shell distributor and you'll pay about $6 a quart.

I run Rotella T6 5-40 in the engine, change it every 13,000 when the dashboard tells me. Make sure you get the right oil filter, many of the online websites have it wrong in their database, you have to make sure you get the long one. The short one is for gassers.

In the tranny, I did fluid/filter change around 200k, put in Shell 134, but I couldn't find it any cheaper than about $10/qt

M1 0w40 is 229.51 approved. ESP is not necessary for 2005-6 CDIs. Best value for ow40 is at Walmart nationwide.

X2: Shell 134 is only ATF I found at reasonable cost here in US.
