Are K1 and K2 springs the same?

I have a 1984 Mercedes 300D tranny is a 722.315 I have flare in the 2-3 shift and need the k1 spring (thrust pin) part number 126 270 44 77. Is the k2 spring (thrust pin) the same part number? The k2 controls the flare in the 3-4 shift which on my car isn't bad but thought I should relplace it while I am doing the k1. Thanks

No. The original springs are not the same. In some cases, the new K1 spring is installed in the K2 accumulator as a problem-solving tactic.

Do you happen to have the part number for the k2 thrust pin?

Evidently, the part number for the original spring is hard to come by. Personally, I would not replace the k2 spring if the 3-4 shift was satisfactory.

I have both springs out of the car now and they look really close to the same so much that I can't tell any difference between them. I think I will take your advice though and just replace the k1 thrust pin with a new one and clean the original k2 and put it back in. Thanks again this forum is awesome!

There were different versions of the K1 and K2 spring trains over the years. Later versions might have been the same. Earlier versions were not.

No, here is what came out of my 82 300TD's trans, the old K1, K2, as well as a new K1. When I put in a new K1 the 2-3 shifts firmed up nicely, when I put a new K1 into the K2 it firmed up the 3-4 shift but not much.
Here's my post all about it. - 3-4 flaring shift.

Well I put the new k1 springs in cleaned up the old k2 and took her for a test drive. The 2-3 shift was great and then noticed the 3-4 was flaring. I am sure it did it before but didn't notice it much because of the bad 2-3 flare. Not too bad but enough to make me take it all apart again and put a new k1 spring in the k2 hole. Now 3-4 shift is firm. This forum and $32 worth of parts saved my tranny.

Glad it worked. I'm amazed at how much you can do to these transmissions to help them out.

You can always dial the modulator pin a notch or two, and it will firm all the shifts up, and might take a little of the 3-4 flare out.

Where's the best place to buy new K1 springs at the best price? This may be my next project as I have a 2-3 flare sometimes but not others, depending on how much throttle I give it.

I got mine from the dealer. They were $12 each. Call and give them this part number 126 270 44 77 its listed as a thrust pin. This is what worked for my 84 300d with the 722.315 tranny.

Really good walk through. http://w123maintenance.blogspot.com/2008/02/k-1-spring-kit-replacement-and.html

sorry for jumping on somebody else's thread.. but hopefully someone can help too.

I've read alot about K1 replacement when 2 - 3 shift has flares. Most of them are talking about 722.3 tranny... I have a 722.111 tranny, can I use the same part number for K1 spring?

Thanks..

I'm not sure about the K1 or K2 on the 722.1, but I do know you have a mechanical modulator. It can be adjusted to soften or harden shift. Here's a pic of the one from my 77 300D. It's on the passenger side of the trans.

I just replaced the K1 spring, what came out looks very different than the pics in the link (mine has missing parts). I have to drive it more to tell if it makes much difference.

There is an error in one of the steps of the walk through.

"Drop the pan and this is what you see. This is facing toward the rear of the car. The front of the transmission valve body has all these little plates. We'll be removing the one on the lower right of this picture and replacing some parts inside it with the K-1 spring kit......."

It should be "This is facing toward the FRONT of the car"
