How do you remove gauge cluster bulbs from their sockets?

I'm looking into replacing the gauge cluster bulbs on my 300SD with LED bulbs. When I've replaced these bulbs in the past, it's always been with used ones that had the bulb and socket already attached. Is there a trick to separating the the bulb from the socket? Thanks
