How do you remove gauge cluster bulbs from their sockets?

I'm looking into replacing the gauge cluster bulbs on my 300SD with LED bulbs. When I've replaced these bulbs in the past, it's always been with used ones that had the bulb and socket already attached. Is there a trick to separating the the bulb from the socket? Thanks

I forget which is which but some of the correct bulbs come with a base on them. Others in different locations are a bare bulb. Just pull them out carefully. If they break, get needle nose pliers to remove the pieces.

Some come with the bases attached but it is quite easy to remove the base from the old bulb and put it on the new bulb. They are designed to come apart.

The only one's I was able to replace with LED's were the actual instrument cluster lighting. The other bulbs, which I thought could be replaced easily were actually kind of spot soldered to the base. It was actually easier to buy the correctly made one's. I spent an hour trying to solder those little leads to the base. I changed all of them. This was on an '85 300D. I might add the LED's really work well. I measured the current initially with the original bulbs and it was 700mA, the LED's were around 350mA, no more melted plastic.

Thanks for the replies. Is this the bulb that I should get? : T10 Wedge 5 Ultra Bright SMD LED Bulb 1.5W W5W 12 VDC T3 1/4 - Automotive LED Lights - LEDLight

I assume that these bulbs come with resistors in them already?

The needed resistors are in the base of the new T10's... just pull them from the socket and clip them with as much wire or lead as possible.

Solder them in place. Test them and if they dont come on, rotate the light 180 degrees. Value of the resistor should be 510 ohms.
