w116 300sd Headlight Switch

1979 300sd

The other day I noticed that when I turned on the headlights the Fog lights also came on. When I attempted to pull out and push in the switch I noticed a different feel to the switch. I thought that maybe by pushing in and pulling out the switch it would somehow return to its normal position, well it didn't.

Now I have no lights and the switch turns freely.

So I proceeded to remove the nut that holds the switch, removed the speedometer cluster to have better access and continued to see what was going on.

My question is the following:

Can the headlight switch be disconnected without having to cut or splice wires?

Removed the headlight switch

Removed the headlight switch by slipping off the rubber boot.

Slipping off the boot allowed the bolted down wires to be exposed.
Took a few pictures so to reconnect the same way.

The metal housing that holds the headlight assembly was off.
I could see the crimp markings throughout the circumference of the housing.

I do not know the terminology for all of the different headlight switch parts but Im going to try to tackle it.

I'm hoping that once assembled, the switch will rotate and stop where its supposed to and not have an upside down or sideway switch operation.

Hope someone here has previous experience with taking these switches apart and putting them back together.

I might just by a new switch to avoid all of the hassle of aligning the housing so that the switch aligns with the headlight, fog light and parking markings.

The switch came apart for a reason so maybe these units are not meant to repair.

Please advise

The headlight switches in these cars have a lot of different functions and alot were disabled on us spec cars......I would suggest buying a manual for this car so you are able to properly operate things...
