My 722.3XX rebuild
If only I would have seen this BEFORE taking on the 722.3XX trans rebuild job on my SLD only a week ago!!! I rebuilt mine using a manual I found online (PDF too large to attach, contact me if you would like it emailed to you). It took about 150 pages to print. I believe it is the same manual used by the author of this thread. The original problem was only a broken B-2 piston, but I decided to go through and replace all the friction discs and bands anyway.
After installing the trans and taking a test drive, everything worked perfectly until I pulled the car back into the shop and noticed a leak. I found that the tail shaft housing gasket was leaking. I put everything back as it was, and did not measure anything. I assumed everything was in spec, as the trans was working fine before the piston broke. I removed the tail housing with the trans in the car, and sealed the gasket. After putting it all back together, starting the car with it on the lift, it is still weeping fluid at the gasket. In fact, it is leaking right where the long oil tube dispenses the fluid. The only thing I can think of is the output shaft end play is non-existent, and the tail housing has a minute gap, allowing fluid to take the path of least resistance (it also doesn't help that fluid is squirting out the tube in the exact spot that it is leaking). The last two photos on post #116 (page 8) show the tube. I installed all the shims that were in there, and assumed it would go back together, as nothing changed in that part of the trans. I am not sure I can check the shaft end play with the trans in the car, but if anyone has any ideas, I am all ears. I have a new gasket ready to go whenever I get an idea how to check and or fix it......Rich |
