I've been too cheap and tried using coat hangers. They didn't stay bent. Now I just push it out from underneath. It's not as elegant but works and has no chance of cracking the dash. I'm not saying the MBZ dash would crack when using the tools but other cars would.

I don't think you could manage to crack the dash using the OE tool. The greater danger is damage to the cluster, at the age of these cars the face can pop off pretty easily.

There are generic tools sold for stereo removal that might do the job but they typically don't have the big handles, hence less leverage.

On my '85 300d I don't think the cluster had ever been pulled until I did it last year. It took a considerable amount of effort and I had to work it free gradually, pulling from different points. I don't think I could have removed it without damage, if I had not had the tools.

On previous cars I had where the cluster had obviously been in and out at least once, it was infinitely easier.

I got a set when I was unable to get the cluster out of the SD.

No amount of pushing from the back, or bent coat hang wires pulling from the front has been able to budge it. Haven't tried 'em yet.

There are supposedly rims on the side of the cluster where the hooks can "bite" and not damage the housing. I've never tried it that way, always pushed from the back.
